This week → OpenAI's 5% gambit  ·  TSMC's record quarter  ·  Gemini 3.5 lands Thursday

No fluff. No hype. Just the AI news that mattered this week — what shipped, why it matters, and what to do about it. Let's get into it. 👇

TL;DR — 5 things to know
1
OpenAI offered Washington a piece of itself. Sam Altman pitched giving the US government a ~5% stake — roughly $42.6B at OpenAI's $852B valuation — and floated a plan for every top US lab to put 5% into an Alaska-style public fund. More →
2
TSMC just had its best quarter ever. Q2 revenue hit $39.6B with June up 68% year-over-year, and 3nm capacity is sold out through the end of 2026. The AI chip spend is real — and compounding. More →
3
Gemini 3.5 Pro is expected Thursday, July 17 — with a 2M-token context window and a Deep Think reasoning mode. Same day, Xi Jinping personally opens Shanghai's World AI Conference. Mark the date. More →
4
Big publishing sued Google. Hachette, Elsevier, Cengage and author Scott Turow filed suit claiming Gemini was trained on millions of copyrighted books and articles without permission. More →
5
Anthropic wants its own silicon. Reports say it's in early talks with Samsung on custom inference chips — a direct attack on a compute bill reported at ~$1.25B per month. More →

The stories worth your time
Publishers take Google to court over Gemini

Hachette, Elsevier, Cengage and bestselling author Scott Turow filed suit in New York, alleging Gemini was trained on millions of copyrighted books and journal articles pulled from Google Books, online libraries and pirated sources. This is the biggest copyright fight AI has faced — and Google has deep exposure via Google Books.

#Legal  ·  Why it matters: a loss could reprice training data for every model builder.
New York hits pause on hyperscale data centers

New York became the first US state to freeze new hyperscale data center construction, as the AI buildout collides with grid capacity, energy prices and local politics. Regulators elsewhere moved too — the same week saw enforcement against unpermitted gas turbines powering AI infrastructure.

#Infrastructure  ·  Why it matters: power, not GPUs, is becoming AI's real bottleneck.
Switch preps a monster IPO

Data center operator Switch tapped Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan for an IPO of up to $10B at a valuation near $80B, possibly as soon as Q4 — which would rank among the largest US market debuts in years. The AI infrastructure trade is officially heading to public markets.

#Markets  ·  Why it matters: retail investors are about to get direct exposure to the AI buildout.

OpenAI's 5% gambit

Sam Altman went straight to the top — pitching President Trump, Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Bessent on handing the US government a 5% stake in OpenAI, worth roughly $42.6B at the company's $852B valuation. The bigger idea: every leading US AI lab contributes 5% of its equity to a public vehicle modeled on Alaska's Permanent Fund, so the public owns a direct slice of AI's upside.

Read between the lines and the timing is strategic. Frontier labs are heading toward public listings, regulators are increasingly calling AI's market weight "systemic," and goodwill in Washington is now a competitive asset. Whether or not the fund materializes, Altman just reframed the debate from "should AI be regulated" to "how should the public share in it" — on his terms. Full coverage →

AI funding going to US

The through-line this week is infrastructure: record chip revenue, an $80B data center IPO in the pipeline, and regulators openly describing AI's market weight as systemic. Nearly 88% of global AI startup funding — about $319B this year — has flowed to US companies, most of it to a handful of names. The boom is real; the concentration is the risk. Crunchbase data →
